Choose What Matters Most: Custom Stargazing Scores on No-Haze Stargaze
Sometimes you want the clearest skies. Sometimes you want the closest site because you only have a couple of hours free. Sometimes you are planning a proper deep sky or Milky Way session, where light pollution matters much more than travel time.
That is why No-Haze Stargaze now lets you adjust custom weights for the factors that matter most to you.
Instead of forcing every user to follow the same ranking system, you can now choose how much importance you want to give to:
The score will then adjust based on your own priorities.
Why Custom Weights Matter for Stargazing?
Different people use stargazing sites in different ways.
A beginner who simply wants to see a few stars tonight may care more about finding a nearby site with decent skies. An astrophotographer may be willing to drive much further if the location has darker skies. Someone trying to see the Milky Way or deep sky objects will usually care much more about light pollution than convenience.
A single “best site” score cannot perfectly represent all of these situations. Custom weights make the ranking more personal.
If you want Nearby Stargazing Sites
If your main goal is to find somewhere close to you, you can give distance the highest priority.
This is useful if you are planning a short evening trip, testing a new telescope, taking family or friends out for a quick look at the sky, or simply do not want to drive too far at night.
In this case, No-Haze Stargaze will give more importance to sites that are closer to your postcode, while still showing useful information about cloud cover and light pollution.
This is especially helpful for casual stargazing, where a nearby site with reasonable conditions may be better than a perfect site that is two or three hours away.
Let us look at a small example, Amy wants to go stargazing tonight as the weather is clear. However, she has a meeting tomorrow morning and can't drive far. Amy wants to find locations within 30 miles of her postcode; she doesn't care about the skies being very dark as she just wants to look at planets and satellites. Amy will open No-Haze Stargaze and enter her details to find best sites:
PS: If Amy really lives at this postcode, it is a pure coincidence.
Upon finding best sites, Amy will click on the 'weights' button in the sort bar.
Based on this, Amy will see her recommendations and choose Riddlesdown Common Car Park.
Note: In this example, we ignore that the moon is at 90% illumination, so ideally, Amy will have to find planets and satellites away from the glare of the moon.
If your goal is Deep sky, Milky way or Astrophotography
If your goal is deep sky observing, Milky Way spotting or astrophotography, light pollution becomes much more important.
For these sessions, darker skies can make a huge difference. Galaxies, nebulae, star clusters and the Milky Way are much easier to see when the sky is genuinely dark. Even if a location is further away, it may be worth the drive if the light pollution is lower.
In this case, you can give light pollution a higher weight so that darker sites are prioritised in your results.
This is useful for people planning more serious observing sessions, especially around new Moon periods or on nights when the forecast looks promising. No-Haze Stargaze by default carries weights to prioritise minimal light pollution.
When Cloud Cover Should Be the Priority
Cloud cover is often the deciding factor for whether a stargazing trip is worth it at all.
A very dark site is not much use if the sky is completely covered. On the other hand, a slightly less dark location with clear skies may give you a much better experience on the night.
For example, if you only have one free evening this week and you want the best chance of actually seeing the sky, you may want to give cloud cover the highest priority. This can help you find the site with the clearest forecast, even if it is not the darkest possible location.
This is especially useful in the UK, where weather can change quickly and a clear window can matter more than anything else.
A More Flexible Stargazing Site Finder
No-Haze Stargaze was built to help people find suitable UK stargazing sites without having to check multiple websites separately.
The custom weighting feature is another step towards making the site more useful for different types of observers. Whether you care most about distance, darkness or clear skies, you can adjust the ranking to match your plan for the night.
There is no single perfect setting for everyone. The best weights depend on what you want to observe, how far you are willing to travel and what the weather is doing.
Try different combinations and see what works best for your observing style.
